Randy Newman (4th) - 7/24/2002 - Woodland Park Zoo, Seattle

Set List:
1. Mama Told Me Not To Come
2. Birmingham [Randy started with the Seattle Fair verse from the Johnny Cutler version. "Kids, if you practice, someday you can play songs as hard as this."]
3. Marie ["I wish you could see my eyes in this sun, they're very expressive. They're like goats' eyes."]
4. It's Money I Love [Randy changed the girl to a *19* year-old. I noticed some little kids dancing to this one, which was vaguely disturbing.]
5. Short People
6. Real Emotional Girl
7. Great Nations of Europe ["I think this is the onlytruly honest song I've done -- there's not a lie in it."]
8. The Girls in My Life (Part 1)
*9. If I didn't Have You
10. The World Isn't Fair ["I noted I have 4 kids. I actually have 5, but I like to keep them off balance as to who gets the 'Short People' royalities." Randy told the story about his kid in school to set this up, his second wife ("She doesn't know what I do for a living."), and adding an explanation of the fall of Marxism so as not to waste a song.]
11. You Can Leave Your Hat On [Told the story about writing this as a joke at 26, but now thinking it's the saddest song he's done]
12. Bad News from Home
13. My Country
14. Guilty
15. I'm Dead [Sing-along "...like Tony Orlando and Dawn." After the practice refrain, "That's goddamn convincing! I won't come back. I'll come back to Tacoma."] [Randy mentioned trying to clean up his language here due to all the kids, then announced he'd do one more before going backstage and shooting up.]
16. Political Science [To an audience member: "Sure you can sing along, the trouble is following me. Many drummers have fallen by the wayside."]

INTERMISSION

17. Last Night I Had a Dream
18. Louisiana 1927
19. I Love to See You Smile [Randy talked about how his Dad was hard on him, in terms of compliments, and when his Dad said he'd never heard this song that was nominated for an Oscar, how he'd replied "How the fuck would -- oh, sorry -- How the hell would you have heard it.....?]
20. I Miss You ["A love song for my first wife, written while I was married to my second wife. I just wanted to see how they'd react."]
21. Dixie Flyer
22. Love Story
23. You Got a Friend in Me
24. I Want You to Hurt like I Do [Randy introduced this with his story about wanting to do a "We Are the World, We Are the Children" type number ("It scared me that they
were the children.") and explained that he shared some of these good causes "Sorta. I recently came out against Viet Nam." He said he wouldn't have Shakira sing on it,
even though she's his favorite teen queen "because America's frightened of Shakira."]
25. Baltimore
26. In Germany Before the War [Nicely set in context with some playing children heard in the distant background, and some crying seagulls flying overhead]
27. I Love LA
28. My Life is Good ["Another song about LA sorta, it's autobiographical in a most offensive way."]
29. Davy the Fat Boy
30. Sail Away
31. I Think It's Going to Rain Today

ENCORE

32. Lonely at the Top ["I think hopefully we'll find a way
to steal your water for LA"]
33. Feels Like Home
